The project sits at the southern end of New York’s Battery Park City, one block from the Hudson River. The program includes a museum of women’s history in America and a technology leadership center. We proposed a design concept that is a paradigm for women’s history. It interprets women’s political, social and creative societal advancements as a weave of overlapping events versus a chronological or hierarchical order. The spatial concept resembles interlocking loops that form connections between exhibits and offer rich experiential opportunities.
The building exterior is a double wall that represents women’s creative and technological leadership. A solid flat inner wall is wrapped in a folding glass plane. The zone between the two walls reduces solar gain in the summer and provides passive heating in the winter. The outer glass curtain reflects its surroundings with multi-faceted planes that speak to the multiple roles women have played in society as they blend together images of water and city, past and present.
