Armstrong’s fundamental business is the design and production of architectural building materials. This new exhibition center features the company’s products, fabrication methods and history. We repurposed a former factory as a gallery that demonstrates how building materials can shape space, light and form. Sections of the building’s floor, walls and roof are removed to create open space and admit natural light. The structure of the existing building is exposed and utilized as an armature for the new gallery infrastructure. The interiors incorporate Armstrong products in ways that explore new innovative uses. The building is located off the beaten path on the campus. To increase its visibility, a bold new façade with integral large-scale graphics wraps the original building. This perforated metal skin filters natural light to the galleries, frames views of sky and landscape and highlights the company brand.
