The conference center, commons and headquarters buildings together form Armstrong’s new campus nexus. The site is a beautiful hilly terrain with pedestrian connectivity challenges. To create spatial linkages between these three buildings, we developed a series of outdoor courts at two levels and connected these with stairs and ramps. At the lowest elevation, the conference center is entered from a courtyard it shares with the campus commons. A glass-enclosed corridor connects these two buildings. Inside the building lobby, a steel truss buttresses this mostly underground structure, at the same time framing entries to interior assembly spaces. As viewed from the headquarters building, the sunken conference center appears as a whimsical landscape sculpture.
