Bike Shed

The urban status counterpart to the suburban three-car garage may soon be the 100-bicycle garage, replete with washing and tune up facilities. The cycle-centric occupants of a Chelsea condo decided that the highest and best use of their large rear courtyard was bicycle storage. In homage to Chelsea’s industrial and transportation past, a modular steel structure is clad with translucent panels that expose the racks of bicycles inside. Facing the open landscaped courtyard, hydraulic doors flip up to provide ventilation and shade for seating and a service bar.
