57 Irving Place sits at the edge of the Gramercy Park Historic District, home to some of the most distinctive residential buildings in New York City. This refined glass structure draws inspiration from the scale and texture of its neighborhood, translating traditional design strategies into a contemporary language. The building envelope is designed as what we call a ‘living façade,’ where the internal planning gives shape to the face of the building. Projecting bays align with key interior spaces, shifting locations with different unit layouts. Metal tracery visually unites the individual units while providing shading and depth to the façade. The glass has properties that change color and transparency depending on lighting conditions. Automated windows project straight out from the building face for airflow on all four sides.
